Project Zomboid · Patch notes

42.20

Build 42 goes stable

Stable

The first stable release of Build 42. Many areas of the map were redone with new buildings and places, forests gain extra-large trees and two new challenges arrive. Multiplayer gets its anti-cheat back along with a long list of desync and exploit fixes. Build 41 stays playable through the legacy41 branch on Steam.

The highlights

  • Map glow-up: many areas redone by the mapping team, with new tiles, buildings and places, plus new room and container definitions.
  • XL and XXL trees now grow in the world and give more wood when felled; while driving, right-click hides their canopy.
  • Challenges: "Top of the World" and "28 Minutes Later" take the place of "Cabin in the Woods", and "A Really CDDA" no longer lets you respawn.
  • Balance: the butcher hook yields more meat from big animals, trailers can come loose on sharp or fast turns, and the "Zombie count before deletion" sandbox option now goes up to 5000 (it was 500).
  • Multiplayer: anti-cheat reworked and switched back on, ping shown in the player lists, a trade window for each split-screen player, and fixes for zombie culling, killed zombies coming back after relogging and several item-spawning exploits.
  • Mods get back the Modding API functions lost with the 42.14 security patch, and controllers now work in the trading window.

Hotfixes4

  1. 42.20.1

Fixes the lag busy servers suffered when unloading chunks and a memory leak, and lets mods write .json files.

  2. 42.20.2

Mods now have to write %% to show a percent sign; the old way keeps working for a while, and the log points out what to update.

  3. 42.20.3

Servers can hold up to 254 players and admins can join a full one; also more memory-leak fixes and fewer black or grey squares when moving fast.

  4. 42.20.4

A security fix that removes the loadstring and loadstream Lua methods, so mods relying on them need an update.
