42.21

Fewer duplicated zombies and less intrusive trees

Stablehit the unstable branch on September 23, 2026

The first incremental update after Build 42 went stable, tested on the unstable branch for five days before release. It goes after zombies that vanished when you came back to an area and duplicated zombies online, makes XXL trees easier to see past and turns loadstring and loadstream back on for mods. The Indie Stone says a few duplication cases remain and are planned for the next update.

The highlights

  • Zombies no longer disappear when you leave a chunk and come back, in single player and online, and duplicated zombies in multiplayer were addressed too.
  • XXL trees get out of the way: they fade better while you drive, no longer cover the houses and furniture beneath them, and are more see-through overall.
  • The Welder starts out knowing Welding recipes rather than Blacksmithing ones, washing machines now clean dirty rags and bandages, and fridges lose their cold little by little once the power goes off.
  • 86 more fluid containers can purify water in the right oven, and explosives now work in basements.
  • Split-screen: each player keeps their own read books and XP boosts, fishing behaves, and a crash when two players share a moving car is gone.
  • Multiplayer: a wider anti-cheat, safehouse exploits closed, no more joining dedicated servers without Steam authentication (it got around SteamID bans), and smoother driving with high ping.
